The pet industry is booming, with the global market projected to hit $259.4B in 2024 and $87.18B in North America alone. Millennials are the largest group of pet owners, and nearly 60% of households earning $80K+ are leading this trend.

Pet ownership isn’t just about necessity, it’s about deep emotional connection. More than 88% of owners consider pets family, and 86% credit them with improving mental health, offering calm, comfort, and unconditional love. But this bond comes with responsibility: experts recommend 1–2 hours of daily care, yet 71% of dog owners feel guilty leaving pets alone, a gap that fuels demand for walkers, sitters, daycare, and premium services.

Financially, owners invest heavily to ease this guilt and express love: Americans spent $700M on pet Halloween costumes in 2023, and seasonal spending in the UK can surge up to 964% during Christmas. In cities like Montréal, platforms such as Rover, Pawshake, Care.com, and Bark.com are already catering to these needs, but the opportunity for smarter, more personalized care solutions remains wide open.

Pawsome meets this demand by offering peace of mind through a platform that matches pet owners with thoroughly vetted caregivers. Each caregiver is trained, interviewed, and certified, ensuring professional, compassionate care that pet parents can trust.

That’s when we realized: Trust isn’t a feature. It’s the foundation of meaningful pet care.

Listening Closely

Through user interviews, informal surveys, and competitor analysis, we uncovered three recurring needs:

Introducing the Pawsome Platform

Pawsome Concierge has evolved into a two-sided pet care platform, designed to meet the real needs of both pet owners and caregivers.

For Pet Owners:

Meet Emma, a young professional who travels 2-3 nights a week. She worries about her Max’s dinner times and whether the sitter understands his special diet. With Pawsome Concierge, she gets real-time photo & message updates, and knows the caregiver is trained, giving her peace of mind so she doesn’t postpone trips home.

All caregivers must complete training, pass an exam, and an interview before being accepted onto the platform.

Our biggest challenge: design a platform that feels professional yet warm, without making things too complicated for either side.

Here’s how we solved it:

• Process-Based Design

From the first login, both pet owners and caregivers are guided through a structured, goal-oriented flow, helping them understand how the platform works and what’s expected. Pet owners complete detailed pet profiles, while caregivers begin training, interviews, and certification processes.

We observed that adding verification steps (training, interviews) raised trust but also increased friction: caregiver signups dropped by 20%. To balance, we added a progressive onboarding (low barrier initial signup + verification later), which restored signup rates while maintaining quality.

• Trust-First Experience

We embedded transparency throughout the journey: from visible caregiver credentials and reviews to real-time pet updates and strong customer service. Everything is designed to reduce worry and increase confidence.

• Data-Powered Personalization

Using detailed pet profiles, caregiver qualifications, and contextual filters like service type and location, the platform recommends ideal caregiver matches, creating a sense of security through thoughtful technology.

• Bilingual Support for Wider Accessibility

To ensure all users across Canada feel included, the entire experience is available in both English and French.

Testing, Feedback, and Iteration

After launching the beta version, we conducted usability tests and gathered ongoing feedback.

Here’s what we learned:

What Worked:

• Users found it easy to choose caregivers thanks to our smart recommendation system.

• The booking and payment process felt smooth and intuitive.

• Many appreciated the ability to save favorite caregivers for quicker future access.

During beta testing with 25 pet owners, 82% agreed that the recommendation system and the ability to mark favorites made it easier to narrow down caregivers. On average, they selected a caregiver 35% faster compared to the previous flow.

What Needed Improvement:

• Some users were confused about how to become a caregiver after landing on the homepage.

• There was confusion around what to do in edge cases, like canceling a service or changing the time or location.

Every interaction, from signup to service booking, either builds or erodes trust, design must honor that.

Serving Two User Types is a Balancing Act
Marketplace platforms must serve both sides equally without letting one dominate the experience.

Clarity and Guidance Drive Confidence
Users feel more confident when the platform provides a clear path, explains what to expect, and offers reliable support during critical moments.

Final Thoughts

Pawsome Concierge didn’t just become another pet service marketplace.
It became a trusted community where pet lovers meet, connect, and care for each other’s furry family members, both online and offline.
